What are BWE files and how to open them

What is a BWE file?

A .BWE file is a Black And White 2 Environment Data file.

Black And White 2 Environment Data files store terrain and environment layout data used by the video game Black & White II, developed by LionHead Studios. They contain definitions for landscape features such as where trees grow, how land surfaces are shaped, where rocks, ores, forests, town centres, and villagers are placed, and how various environment-setting parameters like sound surfaces, day length, and tech level are configured. These files are used as part of the game's level data to shape what players see and interact with in a given map.

These files are created and read by the Black & White II engine. The file resides in the Data\landscape\BW2\ folder of the game installation. It is accompanied by other terrain and environment files such as .TER (terrain), .WAL (wall or boundary), .PAT (pattern/texturing), and .XML walk files. The game uses the data in the environment file to build static and dynamic features in the map before rendering or gameplay starts.

The internal structure begins with the ASCII header VERSION(. Following that, the content includes text-based commands or tokens such as SET_DEFAULT_SOUND_SURFACE, CREATE_TREE, CREATE_TOWN_CENTRE, GREEK_ABODE_TOWN_CENTRE, SET_DAY_LENGTH, SET_LAND_NUMBER, PLAYER_ONE, LOAD_LANDSCAPE, and others. These keywords label sections or objects in the environment, indicating the placement, properties, and attributes of features. The combination of header and strings serves as a signature to identify this format.
