What is a BRRES file?

A .BRRES file is a Mario Kart Wii BRRES Model Data file.

Mario Kart Wii BRRES Model Data files store 3D models, textures, and animations for game objects such as vehicles, characters, and track components inside Mario Kart Wii. These files are used by the game engine to load in-game models (often called MDL0), the images that wrap those models (TEX0), and motion or scene animations (CHR0, SRT0, PAT0, CLR0, SHP0, SCN0). BRRES files are asset archives rather than standalone data, meaning a single BRRES file contains multiple sub-files used together to render a complete object.

Nintendo itself creates BRRES files when preparing game assets for Mario Kart Wii. Designers or developers export model geometry, skinning, bones, texture images, and animation frames, then bundle them into a BRRES archive. Modders use these files to replace or edit existing assets (for example changing textures or animations), but the file as shipped by Nintendo is read by the Wii console at runtime to present visual content.

Internally, BRRES files begin with a header that includes a four-byte ASCII magic signature "bres" at offset 0, followed by version and size fields. One later section begins with the ASCII string "root" at offset 0x10, which points to the directory structure listing the sub-files inside. All sub-files - such as MDL0, TEX0, CHR0, etc. - use a shared string pool at the end of the BRRES file for names and identifiers.
