What are BRP files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a BRP file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BRP files.

What is a BRP file?

A .BRP file is a BRender BRP file.

BRender BRP is a custom multimedia container format developed by Argonaut Games for packaging animation data in certain video games such as FX Fighter and Alien Odyssey. It holds interleaved video and audio streams organized into separate logical channels, allowing playback of synchronized audiovisual content within the game's engine.

Files in this format are created by tools associated with Argonaut's BRender engine, built during the mid-1990s. The video stream inside uses a specific stream type called "BVID" for video data; audio or other data are in other streams indexed alongside it. During playback the engine reads those streams in sequence and decodes frame and audio chunks in order, reconstructing the animation and sound.

Internally the file begins with a 12-byte header including a signature "BRPP", a count of how many streams are packed, and a field often representing the resolution 640×480. Each stream has its own header identifying its FOURCC code (e.g. "BVID" for video), a logical stream index, and the size of its payload data. Data for each stream comes in chunks; each chunk identifies its stream by index, gives the chunk's size, followed by the raw chunk-specific data.
