What are BP3 files and how to open them

What is a BP3 file?

A .BP3 file is a BP SoundMon 3 Module file.

BP SoundMon 3 Module files store music created in Brian Postma's SoundMon editor (versions 2.0 and 3.0). These are tracker‐style module files that combine user-defined instruments, both sampled audio and synthesized tones, with pattern data that arranges those instruments into a song structure. They are used when composing and saving songs inside SoundMon.

SoundMon writes the module, and the modules can later be played back by compatible players or reopened in SoundMon for editing or remixing. In addition to sequencing which notes play when and for how long, the module contains instrument definitions that allow both samples and synthesized sounds (many synths in SoundMon are "drawing"‐based or algorithmic). The format is not purely sample-based; it allows sound generation via synthesis, meaning some instruments are defined procedurally rather than as raw wave data.

Modules begin with internal header data including version and format identifiers. One signature appears as ASCII "V.3" at offset 26. Other checks include zero bytes at specific offsets (for example bytes at offsets 60, 62, 92, 94, 124). These byte signatures help tools identify a valid module.

How to open BP3 files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BP3 file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BP3 file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
