What are BORDERS files and how to open them

What is a BORDERS file?

A .BORDERS file is an AmiAtlas Borders Data file.

AmiAtlas Borders Data files store geographical boundary lines used by AmiAtlas, a mapping and route-planning database for the Amiga computer. They define national and regional borders as vector data so that those borders can be drawn over maps. They are part of AmiAtlas's geographic component, separate from roadway, towns or other features. AmiAtlas writes such files as part of its map-data package when preparing or installing a map for a country or region. AmiAtlas later reads them to overlay borders in its maps view or when computing map displays.

Borders data are stored in binary format. Every file of this type begins with the ASCII signature "AMIGA_ATLAS_BORDERS" at offset zero, exactly this header string identifying the file as AmiAtlas's Borders Data. Additional internal structures beyond that signature are proprietary to AmiAtlas and define the lines (vector segments) that make up the borders.

How to open BORDERS files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BORDERS file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BORDERS file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
