What are BOOTSKIN files and how to open them

What is a BOOTSKIN file?

A .BOOTSKIN file is a BootSkin Theme file.

BootSkin Theme files store custom boot screen appearances for the Stardock BootSkin application, allowing a user to replace the standard Windows startup screen (background and progress bar) without modifying system kernel files. The format enables changing what appears during system boot (Windows 2000, XP, Vista, etc.) by packaging together a background image, a progress bar image, and a configuration file.

A BootSkin Theme is created using Stardock's BootSkin or BootSkin Vista software. Users supply a bitmap image for the boot screen background (usually in a 16-color BMP format) and a second bitmap for the progress bar. They also edit a bootskin.ini text file that specifies metadata (name, author, description) and layout parameters such as screen size, the file names for the images, and exact pixel coordinates for where the progress bar should appear. Then those files are combined (zipped) and formally packaged as a theme. To apply it, BootSkin reads the packaged file and displays the specified images at boot time.

Internally, a BootSkin Theme file is a standard ZIP archive (as indicated by the "PK" signature at the start) containing at least three files: a bootskin.ini file, a background BMP image (named by the INI's Screen field), and a progress bar BMP image. Within the INI, fields include Screen, ProgressBar, ProgressBarX (horizontal position), ProgressBarY (vertical position), ProgressBarWidth, and metadata fields Name, Author, Description.

Byte signature evidence includes that the file begins with the ASCII characters "PK" at offset zero (the signature for ZIP), contains the string "BOOTSKIN.INI", and contains references to ".BMP" for the embedded bitmap images.

How to open BOOTSKIN files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BOOTSKIN file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BOOTSKIN file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
