BLC File

What are BLC files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a BLC file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BLC files.

What is a BLC file?

BLC files have multiple uses, and Blassic Source is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Blassic Source

Blassic Source files are programs written in the classic-style Basic dialect interpreted by the free Blassic system. They store Blassic programs in a binary (tokenized) form that the interpreter can load and run directly without first parsing text. These binary source files are especially useful when saving a program in a compact, executable format.

The Blassic interpreter produces these files when the SAVE command is used without specifying text format, in which case it writes out the program in its binary source format. They are typically loaded by Blassic when a user runs the LOAD command (it tries both the binary source version and an ASCII text version if available). When editing or viewing, Blassic offers the option to save in text form with the "*.bas" form; that text form may regenerate line numbers if they were omitted in editing, but the binary version preserves them explicitly.

Internally, the files begin with a signature identifying them as Blassic binary source format: the ASCII string "Blassic" followed by a zero byte at offset 0. That header lets software energetically distinguish these files from other formats sharing the same extension.

How to open BLC files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BLC file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BLC file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested three different BLC openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .BLC

While Blassic Source is a popular type of BLC-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .BLC file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Block Breaker Pattern

We know that one BLC format is Block Breaker Pattern. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

Various apps that use files with this extension

These apps are known to open certain types of BLC files. Remember, different programs may use BLC files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.
