What are BITSBOARD files and how to open them

What is a BITSBOARD file?

A .BITSBOARD file is a Bitsboard Board file.

A Bitsboard Board file is a package used by the Bitsboard app on iOS for flashcards and learning games. It stores all the content of a single lesson board - such as words or items - and includes any associated media. Text, images, and audio linked to that board are bundled to go together. This lets users create lessons with pictures, sounds, and descriptions and easily share or move boards between devices.

The Bitsboard app (created by Happy Moose Apps) writes these boards. Normally a board is saved as a folder containing the media files (e.g. .jpg, .png, .mp3) and an XML file named Bitsboard.plist which describes the items ("bits") in the board, their text, description, and how they relate to the media. Users often export these boards via Dropbox or upload them online. For easier sharing, the directory may be compressed into a Zip archive and given this format's name instead of .zip.

Internally this format begins with the standard Zip file signature (bytes PK at offset 0), and contains entries for various media types and XML elements. Signatures include the "Bitsboard.plist" XML file, possibly image (.JPG, .PNG), audio (.MP3), and other content packaged in the archive.

How to open BITSBOARD files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BITSBOARD file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BITSBOARD file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
