What are BGH files and how to open them

What is a BGH file?

A .BGH file is a BubbleGEM Help file.

BubbleGEM Help files store help text used by the BubbleGEM system on Atari ST computers. They contain formatted tips or explanatory messages that GEM applications supporting BubbleGEM can display in speech-bubble style when the user hovers over UI elements or requests help.

These files are created and used by the BubbleGEM resident help system, conceived by Thomas Much. Applications that want to include help bubbles bundle their text into Help files, and BubbleGEM reads those files to show context-sensitive bubbles. BubbleGEM is itself a system extension; it does not write arbitrary graphics but displays text from these Help files in response to user actions.

Technically, BubbleGEM Help files begin with an ASCII signature header. The first bytes are "#BGH000000000…BubbleGEMHelp-File" (in ASCII), at offset zero, which identifies them as BubbleGEM Help (BGH) format.

How to open BGH files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BGH file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BGH file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
