What are BDIX files and how to open them

What is a BDIX file?

A .BDIX file is a Blaise Data file.

Blaise Data files serve as Data Interface descriptions for Blaise NG applications, defining how Blaise interacts with a survey's stored data rather than containing the data itself. They are used by Blaise's Data Provider for .NET to connect to and query data that may reside in a local SQLite file, a relational database, or other supported storage. These files set up the logical schema, data source provider, and model information needed for survey applications to read, filter or update data via Blaise SQL.

Created by Blaise, these interface files are part of the Blaise NG system, replacing earlier BOI files from Blaise 4. They are used during survey design and deployment to configure where and how data will be accessed. Options in a Data Interface file include specifying a ConnectionString, selecting the Data Provider, defining table and column structure, identifying the primary key, and pointing to the relevant Data Model filename.

These files do not themselves contain the actual survey response data; that is stored separately, for example in a default Blaise database file (with extension BDBX using SQLite), or in a server-based relational database like SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL. The Data Interface file contains logical references such as DATASTREAM, FILESTREAM, TABLES, COLUMNS, INDEXES, together with metadata like DESCRIPTION, VALIDATIONSTATUS and DATABASEOBJECTTYPE, which guides how the actual data structure is accessed.

Internally the file can be identified by its SQL metadata and characteristic strings. The file begins with the ASCII signature "SQLite format 3", and contains keywords such as "BLAISE DATA PROVIDER FOR .NET", "DATAMODELFILENAME", "DATAENTRYBEHAVIOUR", "TABLE NAME", "COLUMN NAME", "DATASOURCE", and others.

How to open BDIX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BDIX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BDIX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
