What is a BCK file?

BackupExpress Pro

These BCK files contain the backed up files created in BackupExpress Pro, a backup software used on Mac OS X. These files protect you by ensuring that you don't lose important files, photos, videos, etc. You can back up files from your computer or hard drives.

How to open BCK files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BCK file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BCK file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

Comic Book Creator Background

Comic Book Creator Background files are fixed-screen graphical backgrounds used by the MS-DOS software Comic Book Creator produced by Hi Tech Expressions around 1991. These backgrounds serve as panel layouts or scene settings over which users can place clip art, text (including speech bubbles), or other decorations to build comic pages.

Comic Book Creator writes these files to provide the static art backdrops that are part of its library of clip art and paneled templates. Within the workflow of the program these backgrounds are selected from menus of "backgrounds" when designing each panel or full page. They are not standalone documents but art assets used by the program.

These background files begin with the ASCII signature "Backgrounds.V" starting at byte offset zero (bytes 0x4261636B67726F756E64730056), which allows tools like TRiD to recognize them.

Technical summary: Hi Tech Expressions' Comic Book Creator Background format uses the file extension .BCK, is associated with the DOS application Comic Book Creator, and is identified by the signature "Backgrounds.V" at offset 0.

TNC Packed Backup

We know that one BCK format is TNC Packed Backup. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
