What are BCIF files and how to open them

What is a BCIF file?

A .BCIF file is a BCIF Bitmap file.

The format stores color images without loss of detail using a custom compression method developed for true-color (24-bit) images. It was designed by Stefano Brocchi to compress BMP files in order to reduce size more effectively than PNG, JPEG-2000 or JPEG-LS in many cases, while preserving every pixel exactly. It is suitable for archival, image transfer, or any use where fidelity is essential.

The compression program can read standard uncompressed 24-bit BMP files (no alpha channel) and encodes their raw pixel data into a .BCIF file; it also supports decompressing BCIF back into BMP. The compressor is free-software under the GPL, with both a Java and a native Windows utility available. In its workflow, auxiliary data such as metadata, transparency, or color-profiles from the original image are discarded, preserving only the true-color pixel content.

Files begin with the ASCII byte signature "BCIF" at offset zero.

How to open BCIF files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BCIF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BCIF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
