What are BBMODEL files and how to open them

What is a BBMODEL file?

A .BBMODEL file is a Blockbench 3D Model file.

Blockbench 3D Model files store Blockbench project data in a format native to the Blockbench 3D modeling application. These files preserve everything needed to fully restore a project inside Blockbench including the model geometry, textures, editor workspace layout, hierarchy, animation data, and undo history. The format is JSON-based and meant for internal project saving rather than deployment or rendering in other software.

These files are created by Blockbench when the user saves their work with "Save Project" or similar command, often automatically when closing or exporting from the internal editor. When reopened in Blockbench, the file restores all aspects of the modeling session: positioning, rotations, named elements (e.g. cubes, meshes, locators), texture assignments, hierarchy/grouping (outliner), animation controllers if any, display transforms, and editor settings including what is visible in the outliner and what is open or closed in tree views.

Internally, the file begins with a "meta" section that includes a format_version and model_format, followed by other top-level fields such as resolution (texture width/height), elements (defining cubes or meshes with their origin, rotation, UV mapping), textures (paths or embedded image data), groups, outliner (scene hierarchy), animations and display settings, and optional fields like editor_state and undo history.

Byte signature checks indicate that files start with ASCII characters forming {"meta":{"format_version":" and contain strings such as MODEL_FORMAT, RESOLUTION, ELEMENTS, OUTLINER, TEXTURES, BOX_UV, HEIGHT, WIDTH, etc., which are keywords in the JSON structure used to parse and validate the file.

How to open BBMODEL files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BBMODEL file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BBMODEL file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
