What are BAND files and how to open them

What is a BAND file?

A .BAND file is a SuperJAM! Band file.

SuperJAM! Band files store the configuration of the "band" in SuperJAM!, a music creation tool by The Blue Ribbon SoundWorks for the Amiga computer. These files record the set of instruments ("musicians") that make up the backing band, including the drums, bass, guitar, melody lines and other instruments, along with their sound mappings and patches. They allow the producer to load, save and switch entire band configurations - mapping internal Amiga samples or external MIDI patches - for use in styles and song arrangements.

SuperJAM! produces Band files via its "Band" window, where instrument slots are assigned names, patches or samples are chosen, and each slot can be tied to a particular instrument such as "KEYBOARD", "ELEC SNARE", "DRUMS", "GUITAR", "BASS 1", etc. When a Band file is saved, it captures all such settings so that the backing configuration can be reused or shared. These Band files are separate from the actual song data, which is stored in different files, and from MIDI or other export formats.

Band files begin with a specific signature: the ASCII four-character code BAND at offset zero, followed by null bytes. Inside the file are embedded strings naming instrument parts such as CLOSED HI HAT, HIGH CONGA, MELODY, STRING, etc., which correspond to the preset instruments and drum kit pieces that SuperJAM! can assign.

How to open BAND files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BAND file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BAND file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
