What are AWM files and how to open them

What is an AWM file?

AWM files have multiple uses, and AllWebMenus project is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

AllWebMenus project

These AWM files contain menu structures created in AllWebMenus, a web page menu creation software by Likno. You can use this software to create dropdown menus for your homepage. The software lets you create the menu visually and generates the code for you. AllWebMenus gives you access to over a hundred templates to use and modify to fit your webpage needs.

How to open AWM files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AWM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AWM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While AllWebMenus project is a popular type of AWM-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .AWM file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Astound Movie

Astound Movie files store full multimedia presentations created using the Astound presentation-authoring program by Gold Disk (later Astound Inc.). These files combine slides, text, images, audio, video, animations and interactive events into one presentation package written for Windows systems and earlier Macintosh platforms. The format was designed so that once an author builds a show - with sound and video clips, custom slide transitions, and interactive elements - it can be played back as a multimedia "movie" using the Astound Player application.

The Astound program generates these files during the authoring process. Authors build presentations using templates and add-ons such as sound clips (AIF, SND), graphics (PICT, BMP, GIF, JPEG, TIFF), data from spreadsheets, and QuickTime movies. After construction the file is saved in the proprietary format allowing self-contained playback - with all slides, media, transitions and interaction embedded. Astound Movie files serve for presentations, instructional media, sales or training displays where the show runs like a movie. Conversely, the Astound Player or viewer reads these files to display the presentations at runtime.

Internal identification of the format is via a byte signature at the start of the file: ASCII "GDAW" begins at offset 0, "VERS:" appears at offset 8, and the sequence "dwvr" appears at offset 16. These markers are part of the header used by the software to confirm the file type.
