What are AWLIVE files and how to open them

What is an AWLIVE file?

An .AWLIVE file is an Active WebCam Live Capture file.

Active WebCam Live Capture is a proprietary video file format used by Active Webcam from PY Software to record live video and audio for surveillance or monitoring. The format stores streams captured from web cameras, camcorders, TV-boards, analog or IP cameras, either continuously, when triggered by motion, by schedule, or on demand. Files in this format can be encrypted and password-protected so that only computers with Active Webcam and valid credentials can decrypt and play back the content.

The format is produced by enabling the "AWLive" or "Live Recording" setting in Active Webcam. When live-recording is active, the program writes the data into an AWLIVE file, often in a temporary folder, then optionally archives it when recording stops, motion ends, or a schedule finishes. Playback of AWLIVE files requires the same program; the file is not compatible with standard media players unless they have explicit support for this format.

In its technical header, the file begins with an ASCII signature ".PYSOFT.COM" at offset zero, identifying it as a PY Software product; further in the file around byte offset 76 it contains the ASCII string "JFIF," indicating that JPEG image frames are encoded inside the video stream.

How to open AWLIVE files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AWLIVE file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AWLIVE file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
