What are AVROLAYOUT files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an AVROLAYOUT file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AVROLAYOUT files.

What is an AVROLAYOUT file?

An .AVROLAYOUT file is an Avro Keyboard Layout file.

Avro Keyboard Layout files store custom keyboard mappings for the Avro Keyboard program by OmicronLab. These files define alternative fixed-keyboard layouts (such as Probhat or Bijoy variants) for typing Bengali script or transliterating English inputs into Bengali. They are used when a user selects or installs a non-default layout via the Layout Editor in Avro.

An Avro layout file is produced and edited by Avro Keyboard's Layout Editor. The layout file holds all the key mapping information for different modifier states (Normal, Shift, AltGr, Shift+AltGr). It also includes metadata such as the layout name, version, developer name, and optional comments. In newer versions of Avro Keyboard (5.x), older layout files are auto-converted to a revised internal structure so they remain usable.

These files are structured in XML. They start with a standard XML declaration (<?xml version="1.0" encoding="..."?>). Inside, fields include key definitions named like KEY_A_NORMAL, KEY_A_SHIFTALTGR, etc., marking what character is output when a given key is pressed under certain modifier combinations. Other internal tags include LAYOUTVERSION, AVROKEYBOARDVERSION, LAYOUTNAME, DEVELOPERNAME, DEVELOPERCOMMENT, images for different layers (shifted, AltGr etc.), and sections for numeric keypad keys such as NUM0…NUM9.

The file begins with the XML signature <?xml version="1.0" encoding="..."?>. Tokens like "AVROKEYBOARDVERSION", "KEY_A_NORMAL", "KEY_COMMA_SHIFTALTGR", "LAYOUTNAME" are present throughout.
