What is an AVIF file?

An .AVIF file is an AV1 Image File Format Bitmap file.

AV1 Image File Format Bitmap (.avif) is an image file format used to store pictures (still images) or image sequences in a single file. It uses compression based on the AV1 codec inside a HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) container. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, high dynamic range (HDR), wide color gamut (WCG), and transparency via an alpha channel. It also allows multiple images or animation frames in a single file.

AVIF files are produced by writers or encoders that implement the AV1 codec and conform to the AVIF specification, developed by the Alliance for Open Media. Images created in software or encoded for web delivery can be exported in .avif format. Devices or programs that read these files decode the AV1 bitstream from the HEIF container. The specification defines profiles, constraints, and how images, sequences, and additional metadata like color profiles or transparency should be stored.

Internally, an AVIF file begins with a box at offset 0 containing "ftyp" at offset 4, and includes contained strings like "AV01", "AVIF", "AV1C", "FTYP", "mdat", "META" among others. These are part of the ISO Base Media File Format structure it uses to identify the file as AVIF.
