What is an AVASTSOUNDS file?

An .AVASTSOUNDS file is an Avast! Soundpack file.

Avast Soundpack files store a packaged collection of sound effects used by Avast security software. These packs are distributed by Avast Software to customize what sounds play for events like threat detection, scan completion, virus definition updates, and more. The soundpack format bundles together several standard WAV audio clips, each assigned to a specific event within the Avast user interface. Soundpacks may also include themed voices (for example "Redneck" or "Santa Claus") or be localized into different languages.

These files are created by Avast's tools or downloaded from Avast's website and are installed through Avast's settings. When a soundpack is installed, Avast extracts the collection of WAV files and stores them where the program expects its notifications sounds. Users can select the soundpack from Avast's settings so that those WAV files are used instead of the default ones. When Avast plays a sound for an event - such as "Threat detected," "Scan completed," "Virus DB updated," or "Welcome" - it refers to the relevant WAV file in the active soundpack.

These files are ZIP archives under the hood. The file begins with the PK ZIP signature (bytes 50 4B 03 04 at offset 0), and inside are named WAV files including SUSPICIOUS_DETECTED.WAV, VIRUS_DB_UPDATED.WAV, THREAT_DETECTED.WAV, SCAN_COMPLETED.WAV, PUP_DETECTED.WAV, and WELCOME.WAV. The extension is "avastsounds."
