What are AUM files and how to open them

What is an AUM file?

An .AUM file is an Adobe Update Manager Data file.

Adobe Update Manager Data files store update metadata used by Adobe's update systems to check, download, verify, and apply updates for Adobe software. These files are written by the Adobe Update Manager component included in Adobe systems and are used on Windows platforms with Adobe Creative Suite and its related update services.

They contain human-readable settings and information such as component names, version numbers, installation targets, expected file sizes, and update verification rules. For example these files may include fields like DESTINATION, VERIFICATION TYPE, EXECUTABLE NAME, COMPARISON TYPE, SIZE, ARGS, HTTP locations, and manifest entries. These fields help determine what needs to be updated, where and how to fetch the components, and how to verify their integrity before installation.

The format is structured as XML text beginning with the character "<" at the first byte. Internal keywords such as MANIFEST, COMPONENT, AUVERSION, KEYFILE, FILEINFO, and TARGET appear throughout. Paths may include environment variables like %APPDIR%. Frequently strings like DESCRIPTION DEFAULT, DISPLAYNAME DEFAULT, DATA, EXECUTABLENAME, SIZE, among others are present. The metadata often references Adobe domains and uses terms like INSTALL, UPDATES, HTTP to indicate download sources.

How to open AUM files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AUM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AUM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
