What are ATL files and how to open them

What is an ATL file?

ATL files have multiple uses, and Aladdin 4D ATList is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

How to open ATL files

Important: Different programs may use files with the ATL file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ATL file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested five different ATL openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .ATL

While Aladdin 4D ATList is a popular type of ATL-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .ATL file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Artlantis 3D Scene

Artlantis 3D Scene files store complete three-dimensional architectural scenes created using software from the Abvent Group such as Artlantis Studio or Artlantis Render. They preserve all the scene information including geometry (walls, objects, terrain), surface materials (shaders and textures), lighting (artificial lights and natural sun/heliodon), camera and viewpoint setups (perspectives, panoramas, fixed or parallel views), environmental settings (background, sky, ambient effects), and animation or VR-object data. These files are designed for visualisation and rendering: to produce photorealistic images, panoramas, or animations from architectural models.

The format is the native scene document type for the Artlantis application. It is created whenever a user saves or exports a full Artlantis project, and is updated through "Save As…", "Export", or via plug-ins from modelling software like Archicad or SketchUp, which can send geometry, textures, lights, cameras, and layer information directly into this scene format. It can also be used as a "reference file" to reuse prior elements (e.g. shaders, lights, viewpoints, etc.) in new versions of the scene.

Files begin with metadata identifying them as Artlantis scene files. They contain structured information covering object names, scenes, shaders, lights, helio-don, camera definitions and their parameters. (No publicly documented fixed byte-signature is confirmed.)
