What are ATHTUNE files and how to open them

What is an ATHTUNE file?

An .ATHTUNE file is an Athtune Script file.

Athtune Script files hold music compositions created with Athtune, a Win32 script-based music tool running under .NET Framework 2.0. It is designed for composing chiptune or tracker-style music via text scripting rather than a graphical interface, letting composers define instruments and musical arrangements through code-like sections.

This format is produced by the program Athtune, which converts script files into WAV audio output for listening and distribution. The script comprises two main parts: one section (or multiple) for defining sound-synthesis ("##synth") where wave-shape, FM synthesis, noise, and instrument behavior are coded; and a single "##tune" section where musical notes, channels, tempo, octaves, volume, and other performance commands are written in an MML-like syntax.

Files in this format start with the ASCII signature "##synth" at the very beginning (offset 0x0) to mark the beginning of instrument definitions. They include key strings such as "INCLUDE HELPER", "NUM TICK()", "FREQUENCY", "NOTE", and "TUNE" within their content, which the Athtune tool recognizes during parsing and synthesis.

How to open ATHTUNE files

Important: Different programs may use files with the ATHTUNE file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ATHTUNE file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
