What are ATE files and how to open them

What is an ATE file?

An .ATE file is a Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer Textures file.

This file format holds texture data used by the game Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer. Game assets such as terrain, wave, board or environment graphics are stored in this format so the game engine can apply those images to 3D models and surfaces.

The .ATE files are created during game development - exported by tools used by the game's artists or by the game's build system - to provide raw or compressed textures for rendering. The game runtime reads these files to load the graphics into memory so surfaces display with the proper colors, details, and shading. The files are not for user data like saves or the user interface - their purpose is purely graphical textures.

Identification of these files is aided by a signature in the file header. At the very start of the data appears the ASCII string ATEX ("bytes 0x41544558 at offset 0") which marks the file as being a Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer Textures file. The format includes internal structures following that signature to describe how the texture is encoded (such as width, height, compression type) though full public specifications are not available.

Important: Different programs may use files with the ATE file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ATE file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
