What are ASB files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an ASB file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your ASB files.

What is an ASB file?

An .ASB file is an IXimager Forensic Image file.

IXimager Forensic Image files are evidence-image containers produced by the IXimager tool when acquiring a forensic copy of a storage device. They are designed to preserve a verifiable record of data acquisition including a protected log of how and when the image was captured, so that source integrity can be checked. These images contain all sectors from the source disk, optionally compressed or encrypted, along with embedded audit information. Their main purpose is long-term evidentiary storage in forensic investigations where verification of acquisition is critical.

Such image files are created by the IXimager application (often in conjunction with ILook Investigator). During imaging, IXimager offers three proprietary output formats: IDIF (compressed), IRBF (raw, uncompressed), and IEIF (encrypted). Which version is used depends on the need for compression or encryption. The resulting container holds both the image data and the log of acquisition, and may be segmented into multiple files of specified size limits. These containers include mechanisms for detecting tampering: if image sectors are altered after creation, IXimager can identify the altered regions.

As a signature, these files begin with the ASCII string ".RiPed_By_ILookImager" at offset 0, followed by additional header data unique to IXimager formats.
