What are ARL files and how to open them

What is an ARL file?

An .ARL file is an Aureal Aspen Sound Bank file.

Aureal Aspen Sound Bank files are audio bank files used by the Aureal Aspen wavetable synthesizer engine. They store collections of sampled instruments and their metadata so the synthesizer can generate musical sounds from MIDI or other input. These files are used especially in older sound card software/drivers for gaming and multimedia, where custom banks control how instruments sound.

The files are produced by the Aureal Control Panel or other support utilities provided for sound cards based on Aureal's Vortex chipset. Once created or updated, the synthesizer engine reads the file to load instrument waveforms, loop points, envelopes, layers, drum kits, and names. The bank can contain 8- or 16-bit samples, various modulation data (such as LFOs and envelopes), and grouped instruments organized by name and layer. Users may swap in custom banks to change how MIDI playback or software synthesizers sound.

Internally, these files are in RIFF format (little-endian), containing LIST chunks including an "sfbk" LIST of subchunks. Metadata fields such as "INFO", "INAM" appear, along with signatures like "$A$S$P$S$F" identifying the samples section. Sample data, instruments, layers, and drum-kit definitions are structured within these chunks.
