What is an APM file?

ArcPad Map File

The ArcPad Map File (.apm) is an XML-based map configuration file used by the ArcPad GIS application. It records which layers (such as shapefiles or AXF feature layers) are included in a map, how each layer should be displayed, plus the geographic extent, coordinate system, and other map-settings. Users create or edit .apm files when saving or opening maps in ArcPad to preserve the map layout and properties between sessions.

ArcPad writes .apm files whenever you save a map or use "Save Map As…"; when ArcPad starts, it looks for a default ArcPad.apm in the default data path and opens it if present. The map extension, projection and layer visibility settings stored in .apm determine which data is shown and how. All layers in the map must share the same spatial reference; ArcPad does not reproject individual layers on the fly.

Technically, .apm files start with an XML declaration (byte 0x3C at offset 0) and include named elements such as COORDSYS, ENVELOPE, LAYER NAME, PROJECTION, SYMBOLOGY, and METADATA among others. The XML schema for .apm defines these elements to capture the projection, extent, visibility, labeling, symbology, bookmarks, and other map-properties.
