What are AP11 files and how to open them

What is an AP11 file?

An .AP11 file is a Siemens TIA Project file.

Siemens TIA Project files store complete automation engineering projects created with Siemens' TIA Portal software Version 11. These projects include the configuration of hardware (PLCs, I/O modules, networking), control logic (program blocks, data types), visualization, safety settings, tags, communication setup, and other metadata needed to build or simulate automation systems. The project format is used internally by TIA Portal to manage all aspects of the automation solution in one file.

A file of this type is produced by TIA Portal V11 when a user creates or saves a new project. The same project may be migrated forward into later versions of TIA Portal, where it will be converted to newer project formats (for example, from V11 to V12 or V13). The project file is opened and edited by TIA Portal, which uses its internal structure to store and retrieve project contents. It is not a backup archive, but rather the live project workspace.

Files begin with a UTF-8 (often with BOM) XML header specifying version="1.0" and encoding="utf-8", followed by XML namespaces and strings such as SIEMENS.AUTOMATION.DOMAINMODEL.PROJECTDATA, OBJECTFRAME.ICOREATTRIBUTES.NAME, and tags like DATAINFOVALUEDATA, BROWSABLETYPE, ICONKEY, common services, and references to WWW.SIEMENS.COM. These identifiers are embedded throughout the project file to mark sections and elements of project configuration.

How to open AP11 files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AP11 file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AP11 file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
