What is an ANK file?

An .ANK file is a Children Of The Nile City file.

Children Of The Nile City is a binary data format used by the video game Immortal Cities: Children of the Nile to store internal game resources and configuration. It is produced by the game developer Tilted Mill Entertainment and is not intended for direct user editing or creation; the game itself reads these files during runtime to implement behaviors, settings, scenario triggers, and game logic that drive the simulation and campaign mechanics.

These files are used to define game scenarios, campaign structure, mission goals, unit types, terrain features, player options, and computer‐player behaviors among other in‐game systems. When the game loads a level or scenario, it parses these files to set up conditions such as pathfinding, river and terrain mesh definitions, state and goal evaluation for missions, and parameters for entities like barges, statues, units, and deity effects.

Files begin with several identifying byte signatures and contain a variety of strings that correspond to internal keyword markers for game systems. Examples include identifiers like TGOALQUARRY, EESCENARIOMANAGER, EESMOBJECT, TUNITANIMAL, TUNITSHIPWRIGHT, TRIVERMODEL, and many others that map to goal types, unit types, managers, and other internal subsystems. Byte offsets include sequences such as "bytes 0x0001000080 at offset 3" and "bytes 0x000000 at offset 9," which help the game recognize the format.
