What are ALIAS files and how to open them

What is an ALIAS file?

An .ALIAS file is a Find And Run Robot (FARR) Alias file.

Find And Run Robot alias files are configuration files used by the Find And Run Robot utility to store groups of command aliases. Users create or edit these files when they want custom shortcuts or "aliases" that map simple text inputs to applications, scripts, searches or other tasks to streamline launching things. The program writes and reads these alias collections so it can present them at runtime.

These files are written in XML format and are intended for user or developer customization. FARR supports placing alias files in special directories such as AliasGroups/MyCustom or AliasGroups/Installed to organize custom or installed sets. New alias files can define new commands complete with icons, scoring options, and grouping so that alias sets can be shared or kept separate without being overwritten by updates.

Internally the files begin with XML headers. They include tags such as FARRALIASFILE, ALIASENTRY, ALIASTEXT, ALIASSETDESCRIPTION, SCORE, SOFTWARE, RESULTS, and FILEFORMATVERSION. They also contain strings identifying the vendor or project (e.g. "WWW.DONATIONCODER.COM", "MOUSER", "FINDRUN"). One signature at offset zero is '<?xml version="1.0"'.

How to open ALIAS files

Important: Different programs may use files with the ALIAS file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ALIAS file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
