AKS File

What are AKS files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an AKS file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AKS files.

What is an AKS file?

AKS files have multiple uses, and AkAbak Script is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

AkAbak Script

AkAbak Script files store the full setup (components, parameters, and connections) for an electro - acoustic network simulation that models loudspeaker systems and related electro-mechano-acoustic structures. The script defines each element of the system - drivers, enclosures, ducts or waveguides, radiators, filters - and how they're connected (via "nodes") so computations of things like impedance, sound pressure level, and frequency response can be carried out.

These scripts are written and edited within the AkAbak software developed by R & D Team. Users enter component specifications (values such as resistance, compliance, mass, geometry) using the script syntax, either manually or via AkAbak's built-in editors. Once the script is complete, AkAbak interprets or compiles it to build a network matrix, carries out simulations combining Lumped Element Methods and Boundary Element Methods, and produces acoustic and electrical response curves. Often, scripts contain comments and can parameterize geometries, enabling flexible design exploration and what-if variations.

The format is identified internally by a distinct header signature: the file begins at offset zero with the ASCII string "AKABAK_SCRIPT_1000". That signature distinguishes these scripts from unrelated uses of the same file extension.

How to open AKS files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AKS file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AKS file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested six different AKS openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .AKS

While AkAbak Script is a popular type of AKS-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .AKS file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Arkos Tracker Song

Arkos Tracker Song format stores musical compositions made with the Arkos Tracker program. It captures everything needed to recreate chiptune-style music for AY/YM sound chips: note sequences, instruments (including envelopes, pitch/arpeggio curves, volume/noise effects), metadata (title, author, dates), pattern ordering (positions, subsongs), track linking for sharing, and hardware/secondary parameters for playback. It supports both simple songs and multiple subsongs within one file.

Files are saved by Arkos Tracker (not just AT2 but also AT3) and are typically created when composing or saving songs. These files are XML-based, sometimes zipped/compressed, and used for further editing, exporting to audio formats, or exporting binary data for playback on actual 8-bit hardware. Arkos Tracker's tools can also convert them to other formats like YM6, AKM, binary, WAV, etc.

Technically, the file begins with an XML declaration (for example "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>"). It includes identifiable tags like SAMPLEPLAYERFREQUENCY, FORMATVERSION, PATTERNS, SUBSONGS, and metadata fields like TITLE, AUTHOR, COMPOSER. The structure matches Arkos Tracker's XML schema ("ARKOSTRACKERSONG.XSD"), and tools parsing it support both older Format 1.x and newer Format 3.x styles.

Various apps that use files with this extension

These apps are known to open certain types of AKS files. Remember, different programs may use AKS files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.
