AIRPORTS File

What are AIRPORTS files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an AIRPORTS file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AIRPORTS files.

What is an AIRPORTS file?

An .AIRPORTS file is a RealFlight Radio Control Flying Site - Airport file.

A RealFlight Airports Data file defines a flying site (also called an "airport") used by the RealFlight RC flight simulator to represent the scenery and environment where you fly virtual model aircraft. It stores terrain, objects like runways, scenery features, lighting, and other settings that specify how that location looks and behaves in the simulator.

The file is created by the RealFlight simulator software from Knife Edge Software (often when you build or edit a flying site in RealFlight's Site/Environment or Airport Editor). The simulator reads this file when you choose a flying site from its Select Airport dialog, showing previews and allowing you to start flights using the scenery stored in the file. You might also see user-created airport files placed into RealFlight's "Airports" folder so that they appear alongside the stock locations.

These files begin with a distinctive header: the first three bytes are ASCII "APT" followed by 0x00 at offset 3. That signature helps RealFlight or tools identify them as airport data files.
