What are AIG files and how to open them

What is an AIG file?

An .AIG file is an Abracadata Drawing file.

Abracadata's Drawing format is used by the home-design program Design Your Own Home: Architecture, made by Abracadata (also known under MCS Investments, Inc.). It stores architectural layout files - floor plans, pre-drawn objects like doors, windows, stairs, walls, and dimensioning data - for users designing homes, interiors or landscapes. These files are written by the Design Your Own Home: Architecture software when you save a drawing project. Users load these files back into the same software to resume editing or to print and export their plans.

Design Your Own Home: Architecture provides tools such as snapping, auto-dimensioning, plan layering, furniture/fixture libraries and interactive tools like a "stud tool" for framing layouts. These files serve as editable workspace documents in that program, not image exports.

Files begin with a distinctive signature: at offset 0 they start with the ASCII string "Abracadata drawing" followed by two bytes 1A 1A. That header is used by TrID and other file-identification tools to recognize the format.

How to open AIG files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AIG file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AIG file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
