What are AIA files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an AIA file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AIA files.

What is an AIA file?

AIA files have multiple uses, and Adobe Illustrator Action is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Adobe Illustrator Action

These AIA files contain the edited images/content created in Adobe Illustrator, a photo editing software geared towards typesetting and logo graphic designs. Illustrator allows you to create web and mobile graphics, logos, icons, book illustrations, and billboards. With the new cloud feature, you can work from anywhere and on any device. This vector graphic editing program was initially developed for the Apple Macintosh.

App Inventor For Android Project

This file is the complete source code archive for a mobile app project created in MIT App Inventor. It is generated when you export your project from within the App Inventor web interface for purposes such as backup, collaboration, sharing or remixing. It holds everything needed to restore the project in App Inventor, including the app's user interface design, programming logic, assets, and project settings.

When using App Inventor, you build apps by visually laying out screens (forms), dragging and connecting blocks (programming logic), and adding media like images or sounds. The file produced after you export the project packs all those parts together. You can re-import it into App Inventor to continue developing or allow someone else to remix your app. The build server uses its contents to generate an installable Android application package (APK).

Internally this project package is just a ZIP archive renamed to the project format. It contains a "youngandroidproject" folder with a project.properties file that stores metadata like project name and main screen; a "src/appinventor/…" folder hierarchy storing .scm files for screen layouts and .bky files for blocks logic; and an assets folder holding all uploaded media. Identifying markers include the ASCII signature PK at the start, and keywords like "PROJECT.PROPERTIES", "YOUNGANDROIDPROJECT", "SCREEN1.BKY", "SCREEN1.SCM", "APPINVENTOR".
