What are AHN files and how to open them

What is an AHN file?

An .AHN file is an Ahnenblatt Genealogy Data file.

Ahnenblatt Genealogy Data files are the native data format used by the Ahnenblatt genealogy program, where all details of a family tree - individuals, relationships, dates, places, notes, sources - are stored in a single file. These files are intended to let users save their entire genealogy project under one self-contained file so data can be backed up, preserved, or transferred between installations of Ahnenblatt. It is the format used when you create or edit family trees in Ahnenblatt and want to save your progress with full fidelity.

Ahnenblatt is both the only program capable of creating these files and the only one that fully reads all of their data; GEDCOM format is provided for exchange with other genealogy software, but some internal details in the native Ahnenblatt file will not be visible when exported. The format maintains compatibility across Ahnenblatt versions (both newer and older ones can read Ahnenblatt files created by each other), and supports Unicode so international and special characters are preserved.

Internal technical identifiers include a signature at the start of the file, such as bytes "0x64626B00" at offset 0, ASCII text ".Ahnenblatt" at offset 12, and embedded keywords like NAME, SUBM, SURN, YYYY, _UID. Also included is the string "SOFTWARE AHNENBLATT CREATED BY DIRK BOETTCHER."

How to open AHN files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AHN file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AHN file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
