What are AHF files and how to open them

What is an AHF file?

An .AHF file is an ASCII Header Format Bitmap file.

ASCII Header Format Bitmap stores image data in a plain-text header followed by binary (or possibly ASCII) pixel data. It was designed for scientific image processing software to allow the metadata - such as image width, height, grayscale calibration, and possibly color channels - to be easily viewed and edited using a text editor. The format is most notably supported by ImageJ via the AHF Reader and AHF Writer plugins.

These files are created and saved by the AHF Writer plugin in ImageJ and opened with the AHF Reader plugin. Users build the header manually or generate it via the plugin, then the pixel data follows. Because the header is ASCII text, metadata can be adjusted after creation if needed. The format is suited for simple images, especially grayscale or single-channel data, where transparency, compression, or advanced features are not required.

Files in this format begin with the ASCII signature AHF{ at offset zero.

How to open AHF files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AHF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AHF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
