What are AGX files and how to open them

What is an AGX file?

An .AGX file is an Adventure Game EXecutable file.

Adventure Game EXecutable is a format used by the Adventure Game Toolkit development system to package an entire interactive text-adventure game into a single file. It replaces and combines the multiple data files that AGT originally used - such as separate location, vocabulary, interaction rules and graphics files - into one compact, portable archive that the AGT interpreter (notably AGiliTy) can run directly.

The format is produced using tools in the AGT ecosystem: one can convert older AGT games into this monolithic form with the agt2agx utility, or compile new AGT-source games with Magx. Once built into this form the game is executed by AGT-compatible interpreters, eliminating the need to manage a directory full of component files, reducing disk usage and simplifying distribution of the game.

Magx (Make AGX) is a compiler by Robert Masenten that takes AGT-source material and outputs the .AGX executable format. AGX files are agnostic of the authoring file clutter: they encompass all rooms, object definitions, vocabulary (.VOC), instructions (.INS), time-table files (.TTL), dialogue and optional configuration pieces. AGX format was adopted to support modern interpreters like AGiliTy and for better portability across platforms.

Games in this format begin with a digital signature: bytes 58 C7 C1 51 52 at the very start of the file, which help identify the file as an AGX executable.

How to open AGX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AGX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AGX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
