What are AG files and how to open them

What is an AG file?

AG files have multiple uses, and Applixware Graphic is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

These AG files contain databases/documents created by Applixware Graphic. Applixware is a suite of office tools with a word processor, email client, spreadsheet editor, and database program. Applixware was ported to Linux and became the first graphical office suite on the platform.

How to open AG files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AG file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AG file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

All known file formats using extension .AG

While Applixware Graphic is a popular type of AG-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .AG file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Lotus Agenda Data Objects

Lotus Agenda Data Objects files are the native database files used by Lotus Agenda version 2.0, a DOS-based personal information manager developed by Lotus Development. These files store everything in your Agenda database in one file: the items ("pieces of information" entered by the user), categories (hierarchical containers to which items are assigned), saved views and sections (ways of organizing and displaying item/category combinations), the rules for automatic assignments ("conditions and actions"), plus macros, notes attached to items or categories, file-level settings like display or password, and other program configuration.

Agenda 2.0 writes these .AG files; when you save your work in Agenda - creating or editing items, categories, views, etc. - those changes are written into the .AG file. Users may export parts of the database in a structured text format (".STF") for transfer or backup, but the .AG file remains the complete working database read and used by Agenda when it opens a file. Agenda includes tools for backing up, validating, or repairing .AG files when corruption is detected.

Technically, .AG files begin with specific identifiable bytes (for example a 0x54 00 value at offset 0 and 0xAB at offset 43), and contain embedded recognizable strings such as "CURRENT ALARMS", "PAST ALARMS", "CIRCULAR REFERENCE", "MAIN", "VIEW", "WHEN", "DONE" and others.
