What are AFR files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an AFR file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AFR files.

What is an AFR file?

An .AFR file is a Caneco BT Project file.

A Caneco BT Project file is used by ALPI's Caneco BT software, which is designed for planning and calculating low-voltage electrical installations. After an electrical system's data has been entered - such as sources, distributions, circuits, protective devices, voltages and standards - the user runs calculations (voltage drop, short-circuit current, temperatures etc.). Once those are done, the AFR file saves the complete project including all numeric inputs, diagrams, and the calculation results.

After generating the AFR file via Caneco BT, it is often used by ALPI's companion program Caneco Implantation. In that workflow Implantation imports or synchronizes with the .AFR file to update cable sizes, layouts, labels and other project details in layout or drawing-based plans. Thus the AFR file acts as a bridge carrying design and calculation output from the calculation tool into layout and documentation.

Technical identifiers include a header signature: at offset 0 the bytes 0x6341350005; also "CANECOBT" appears starting at offset 7. Within the file are many ASCII-key strings like VERSIONCOMPATIBLE32, HOST EXTENDER INFO, STANDARD JET DB, USERDEFINED, DATECREATE, DATEUPDATE, ROOT ENTRY, NAME1, NAME2, OWNER, TITLE, and protection- or object-related keywords.
