What are AFPHOTO files and how to open them

What is an AFPHOTO file?

An .AFPHOTO file is an Affinity Photo Document file.

Affinity Photo Document is the native project file used by Affinity Photo, a desktop image-editing application developed by Serif. These files store your full working image including all layers, text, vector and raster elements, masks, filters, adjustments and effects in editable form. They are meant for saving work that you intend to continue editing, rather than distributing or exporting final images.

When you create a new file in Affinity Photo and use "Save" or "Save As," by default it is saved in the .afphoto format. The file lets you reopen the image exactly as you left off: you can change layers, adjust settings, undo previous steps, alter masks or move text. When you need an output version for sharing or publishing, you export the .afphoto file into a format such as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, PSD or PDF.

Technical identification of .afphoto files can be confirmed by certain byte signatures inside the file. At offset 0 there may be the bytes 0x00 FF 4B 41, followed at offset 8 by 0x6E 7372 5023 496E66 ("nsrP#Inf"). The file may also contain string markers such as "IDATX", "C.DA", "IEND", "IHDR", or "PROT" within its data structure.

How to open AFPHOTO files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AFPHOTO file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AFPHOTO file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
