What are AFOX files and how to open them

What is an AFOX file?

An .AFOX file is an AmigaFox Layout file.

AmigaFox Layout files are the saved work files produced by AmigaFox, a desktop-publishing (DTP) software developed for the Commodore Amiga family. These files store page layouts created by the user, including text boxes, graphic objects, image placements, page settings and design structure. They are meant to be edited within AmigaFox, typically during the authoring of magazines, newsletters, posters, or other print layouts, not for direct use by printers. The content in an .AFOX file is the working assembly of the layout - graphics, text, and their positioning - before output to print or export to graphics formats.

The software that writes .AFOX files is AmigaFox itself, created by Michael Wüst. Users of AmigaFox open, edit, and save layouts using these files. Once the layout is finalized, it may be exported, printed, or published, but the .AFOX file remains the project file for ongoing editing. AmigaFox provides tools for manipulating graphics objects (such as rotating or mirroring), supports multiple layout pages held simultaneously in memory (up to seventeen), and uses built-in backup and versioning features.

Technically, the format is based on the Amiga Interchange File Format (IFF). The file begins with the bytes "FORM" at offset 0, followed (at offset 8) by the ASCII identifier "ALAYAGFX". These identify the file as a FORM IFF of type ALAYAGFX.

How to open AFOX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AFOX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AFOX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
