ADSKLIB File

What are ADSKLIB files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an ADSKLIB file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your ADSKLIB files.

What is an ADSKLIB file?

An .ADSKLIB file is an Autodesk Material Library file.

Autodesk Material Library files store collections of material definitions used by Autodesk design and engineering applications for both visual appearance and physical behavior. Materials in these libraries combine appearance assets (like texture, color, finish) with physical properties (such as density, mechanical behavior, and simulated response). These libraries let users apply standard or custom materials to parts, surfaces, and assemblies for rendering, analysis, and design consistency across projects.

The .adsklib files are created by Autodesk programs such as Inventor, Revit, Fusion 360, and others that support material and appearance libraries. The built-in libraries and custom ones share the same format. Once a library is created or made active via the material or appearance browser, users can select materials from the .adsklib, copy or drag them into their project, modify them (when the library is writable), or export/import the entire library for sharing. These files are managed within Autodesk's project/data libraries system and may be locked (read-only) or unlocked for editing depending on how they are distributed or configured.

Internally, .adsklib files present a structured package similar to a ZIP archive. They begin with the ASCII signature PK (bytes 0x504B0304) at offset zero and contain compressed XML and binary files with names like RENDERMATERIALSCHEMA.XMLPK, INSTANCEPROPERTIES.BINPK, COMMONSCHEMA.XMLPK, ASSETTABLEOFCONTENTS.BINPK, and STREAMVERSIONTABLE.INFPK among others. These internal components include definitions of material schemas, asset instances, property tables, and metadata.
