What are ADO files and how to open them

What is an ADO file?

ADO files have multiple uses, and Adobe Duotone Options is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Adobe Duotone Options

These ADO files contain settings for color transfer curves that specify the properties of two colors to grayscale images in Adobe Photoshop. You can store or load these duotone ink settings and apply them to multiple images.

How to open ADO files

Important: Different programs may use files with the ADO file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ADO file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

All known file formats using extension .ADO

While Adobe Duotone Options is a popular type of ADO-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .ADO file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Adorage Animation

Adorage Animation is a proprietary animation format used by the Amiga version of the Adorage software suite, developed by proDAD. It stores standalone animated effects - such as transitions and motion motifs - produced by Adorage's professional VFX tools. These files are designed for effects work on the Amiga platform and are used for rendering visual animation sequences.

Files are created by Adorage for Amiga, often as part of video post-production workflows or compositing libraries. Once built, an .ADO file represents a complete animation that can be used directly in other proDAD tools or plugged into video editing software. In many cases, users generate or export these animations using Adorage's effect modules and rendering options.

Internally, Adorage Animation .ADO files begin with the ASCII signature "FEE_Anim_V1.0" at offset zero and follow with structured blocks detailing headers such as display dimensions, frame count, bit depth, and palette information.
