What are AD_DRW files and how to open them

What is an AD_DRW file?

An .AD_DRW file is an Alibre Design Drawing file.

Alibre Design Drawing files are 2D technical drawings created by the CAD program Alibre Design. They are used to represent views of 3D models - such as front, top, side, isometric, or sectioned views - with annotations, dimensions, title blocks, and other details required for manufacturing, documentation or patent filing. These drawings update automatically if the underlying model changes.

These files are produced and saved by Alibre Design when working in its Drawing workspace. Users can base drawings directly on 3D parts (.AD_PRT) or assemblies (.AD_ASM) built within Alibre. The drawing files are editable in Alibre and can be exported to other formats such as DWG or DXF for sharing with users who do not have Alibre.

The files begin with a Microsoft Compound Document File header (bytes at offset 0 matching the signature D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1), and contain many internal keywords such as DEFAULT DIMENSION STYLE NAME, AUTO CREATE HOLE CALLOUTS, MEASUREMENTFORMATPAIR, TOLERANCE LOWER VALUE, among others.

How to open AD_DRW files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AD_DRW file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AD_DRW file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
