What are AD_ASM files and how to open them

What is an AD_ASM file?

An .AD_ASM file is an Alibre Design Assembly file.

Alibre Design Assembly (.AD_ASM) files are native CAD assembly files created with Alibre Design, a parametric 3D design application from Alibre Inc. They store complete hierarchical assemblies - parts and subassemblies - defining how individual component files are positioned and constrained relative to one another. Such files are used whenever you build a complex product or machine made of several parts, to capture the relationships (mates, alignments, distances) among its components.

These assembly files are saved by Alibre Design Professional and its related products. When editing, the program reads .AD_ASM files to load the structure, linked .AD_PRT (part) files, constraints among them, possible variants/configurations, and metadata. Users can export from assemblies or extract bills of materials but the .AD_ASM remains the editable, master file for the full assembly composition.

A useful technical detail: these files begin with a binary signature D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 at offset 0. Within the file you can find many internal identifiers like DESIGNASSEMBLYCONFIGURATION, PRODUCT_DEFINITION, APPLICATION_CONTEXT, and END-ISO-10303-21 among others, which help recognize and parse the assembly structure and metadata.

How to open AD_ASM files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AD_ASM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AD_ASM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
