AAM File
What are AAM files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening an AAM file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AAM files.
What is an AAM file?
AAM files have multiple uses, and Art And Magic Module is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Art And Magic Module
Art And Magic Module (.AAM) is the original music module format used in the Amiga game Agony (1992), developed by the group Art & Magic and published by Psygnosis. It stores multichannel 'tracker'-style music: patterns of notes (with timing and effects) plus associated sample data (instrument waveforms), much like other Amiga module formats such as MOD. These files serve as the in-game background, level, intro, and title tracks.
The .AAM files are created by the audio subsystem of Agony, authored by composers such as Jeroen Tel and Tim Wright. AAM files are later played by the game engine, mixing pattern data and samples on the Amiga hardware. They are not general-purpose tracker modules (i.e. not designed for editing in contemporary trackers), but they are preserved and played today via dedicated players like Delitracker.
Files of this format have identifiable internal signatures. They begin with the 8-byte hex sequence 48E7FFFE4BF900DFF00041FA at offset 0; include the ASCII string "EXIT" at offset 26; and somewhere in the file appear strings like "PROTRACKER 1.1B'BODY", "8SVXVHDR", "FILM", "FORM", or "NAME". These markers distinguish Art And Magic Module files from other formats.
How to open AAM files
Important: Different programs may use files with the AAM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AAM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested five different AAM openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .AAM
While Art And Magic Module is a popular type of AAM-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .AAM file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Authorware Shocked File (Map)
Authorware Shocked File (Map) files are map files used by the Adobe Authorware program when delivering Shockwave for Authorware content over the Web or intranets. These files guide the Web Player plugin so that it knows how to retrieve and decrypt or "shock" the already packaged content and external media (images, movies, audio) used by an Authorware course. They are part of the Web Packager / Afterburner process that segments large multimedia programs for efficient web delivery.
Adobe Authorware's Web Packager writes the .AAM map file after "shocking" (compressing and/or encrypting) and packaging an Authorware application. The map file lists each segment file (file parts created during the shock process, often with .AAS extensions), external library or media files, version data, server file paths, and locations to restore those parts for playback. Web servers must be configured with the correct MIME type (application/x-authorware-map) so that browsers and the Authorware Web Player plugin can load the protected content properly.
The file begins with a version line such as "ver.0" at offset 0, contains keywords like "BYPASSSECURITYDIALOG," "0000," and ".AAS" for segment references. The map file includes lines for version ("ver"), segment ("segment"), library, bin, opt, get, put, and comment entries, which together instruct the player how to assemble or fetch the needed pieces.
