AAB File
What are AAB files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening an AAB file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AAB files.
What is an AAB file?
An .AAB file is an Android App Bundle file.
Android App Bundle files with the .aab extension are publishing packages used by Android app developers to submit their apps to stores such as Google Play. These files hold all the app's compiled code, resources, and metadata, but are not directly installable on Android devices. Stores process the bundle to generate optimized APK files matching each user's device configuration.
These bundles are produced by build tools like Android Studio, Gradle, Bazel, Unity, and similar tools with Android support. Once a developer builds a .aab file, they upload it to Google Play (or another supporting store). The store then handles signing, splitting features into modules (base module, feature modules, asset packs, etc.), and serving only the parts needed by each device - like specific language resources, screen-density assets, or native code for that CPU.
Files begin with the standard ZIP archive signature bytes "PK" at offset 0. Inside the archive you will find Android-specific files such as AndroidManifest.xml and module metadata like BundleConfig.pb, along with strings referencing Android support libraries, fragment versions, runtime components, drawables, lifecycle elements, compat layers, viewmodel packages, vector resources, and XML-based layouts.
