What are A8T files and how to open them

What is an A8T file?

An .A8T file is an Atari800Win Plus Trainer file.

Atari800Win Plus Trainer files are used by the Atari800Win Plus emulator to store cheat code settings ("trainer" or "cheat" files) for Atari 8-bit games. A trainer file lets you freeze or modify in-game memory values - such as lives, energy, or other counters - so you can apply cheats like infinite lives. These files are produced by using the emulator's Cheat Options menu after running a game. When you've selected which memory addresses to "Lock in" and set desired values, saving from that menu creates an .A8T file. When loading the same game again, you may load the .A8T file via Cheat Options to reapply those settings without having to redo them each time.

The main program that creates and uses .A8T files is Atari800Win Plus, an emulator for Atari 8-bit (400/800/XL/XE) computers. The workflow is: run the emulator, start the game (ROM, disk, cartridge, or executable), open Misc → Cheat Options, search and lock memory addresses with specific values, then save or load those cheat-sets as .A8T files.

Files start with a specific byte signature that helps identify the format internally. At offset zero the first four bytes are 0x41 0x38 0x54 0x01 (ASCII "A8T" followed by 0x01) which marks the file as an Atari800Win Plus Trainer file.

How to open A8T files

Important: Different programs may use files with the A8T file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your A8T file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
