A4L File
What are A4L files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening an A4L file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your A4L files.
What is an A4L file?
A4L files have multiple uses, and Adobe Authorware Library is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Adobe Authorware Library
Adobe Authorware Library files with the .a4l extension store reusable multimedia and interface components used by Adobe Authorware version 4. These files hold assets such as graphics, icons, sounds, and formatted text that can be inserted into Authorware projects to build interactive e-learning and training applications.
The .a4l file is created and used exclusively by the Authorware 4 authoring environment. Authors design educational or training content by selecting and configuring elements; library files allow those elements to be collected into one file for reuse across multiple lessons or courses. When you open a library from within Authorware, the program reads the file to display its contents to insert into the flow-chart of an activity.
Files in this format begin with a binary signature starting at offset zero showing the ASCII characters ALIB followed by the bytes BE B3 B6 BD 16 00 00 00 F9 FF FF FF 00 00 00 00 … identifying the Authorware Library format version 4.

All known file formats using extension .A4L
While Adobe Authorware Library is a popular type of A4L-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .A4L file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Authorware Library
Authorware Library files store reusable media elements and icons used in educational or e-learning projects created with Adobe Authorware. These files do not contain program flow logic or main presentation layouts; instead they hold media assets and their settings so that multiple Authorware projects can reference and reuse them without duplicating work. This makes development of interactive, multimedia-rich learning applications more efficient.
Adobe Authorware is the application that creates and uses these library files. When building a project inside Authorware, authors can save images, sounds, icons, and formatted text into a library file (with extension .A4L, .A5L, or .A6L depending on version). Those library items may include custom icon properties like start-and-end frames of a video or variable-driven settings. The library file can be stored locally or on a network so that multiple users or different parts of a project can access the same asset collection. Authorware projects link to library-stored icons rather than embedding copies, so updates in the library propagate to all linked uses when the project opens.
These files begin with a specific binary header that identifies them. At offset 0 the first bytes are 41 4C 49 42 BE B3 B6 BD, which in ASCII starts with "ALIB" and continues with a vendor-specified signature sequence indicating an Authorware Library version.
