What are A2D files and how to open them

What is an A2D file?

An .A2D file is an Agros2D Document file.

An Agros2D document (.A2D) is a model file created by Agros2D, an open-source simulation tool for defining, computing, and visualizing two-dimensional physical fields (such as heat transfer, electromagnetics, structural mechanics) using finite element methods. It contains all the setup information needed to define a problem in Agros2D: geometry, materials, boundary conditions, mesh parameters, type of physics involved, adaptivity settings, and how to solve and post-process the results.

The file is produced and consumed by the Agros2D application: the user builds the model in its GUI (or via script), then saves it in .A2D format; Agros2D reads this model file to generate mesh, run finite element solvers, and visualize output.

Internally it is a text-based XML-style document. It begins with a root element <document> and includes tags such as <problems> and <problem> followed by child data fields including "PROBLEMTYPE", "POLYNOMIALORDER", "ADAPTIVITYTOLERANCE", "NUMBEROFREFINEMENTS", "EDGE", "NODE", "GEOMETRY", "LABEL", "MARKER" etc. These define numerical parameters, mesh elements (nodes, edges), domain geometry, and material or boundary labels. A characteristic byte signature is "<document>…<problems>…<problem " at the start.

How to open A2D files

Important: Different programs may use files with the A2D file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your A2D file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
