What are 64C files and how to open them

What is a 64C file?

A .64C file is a C64 8x8 Font Bitmap file.

C64 8x8 Font Bitmap (.64C) files store simple monochrome font data for the Commodore 64 computer. Each file contains a character set made of 8×8-pixel characters (usually up to 256 characters), with one bit per pixel, no color or anti-aliasing. These are used by programs that need custom font sets in graphics or text-mode displays on the C64.

Creators produce .64C files typically by exporting from font editors or by extracting the C64's internal ROM charset; they're used in programs or games which load these 8×8 bitmaps into character generator memory so that text or graphics tiles use those shapes. Software later reads them into memory and renders each character as an 8×8 block of pixels on screen.

Some .64C files begin with a 2-byte header (often representing the loading address), followed by up to 2048 bytes of character data (8 bytes per character × 256 characters). Files with fewer than 256 characters are shorter; total size then equals 2 header bytes plus (number of characters × 8) bytes. The fixed in-file signature ".8" (ASCII 2-byte sequence 0x0038) is found at offset 0 in many of these files.

How to open 64C files

Important: Different programs may use files with the 64C file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your 64C file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
